It is now easier to make more of our research Open Access free of charge

See Swedish version.

More and more universities and research institutions in Sweden are signing Open Access agreements (which means that the costs for Open Access publishing are covered in the subscription) with publishers, which will make a larger proportion of Chalmers research Open Access starting from the new year. Ever since our first agreement with Springer in 2016 new deals have continuously been added, and as of now there are in total seventeen deals that cover the whole publishing fee. Some of these agreements are with the five largest scholarly publishers in the world: Elsevier, Springer, Wiley, Sage, and Taylor & Francis.

The costs for publishing and the administrative burden should not fall upon you as a researcher, but on the libraries and funding agencies. Read more about the details below or visit the library during our Drop In sessions in January or February.

Open Access with Elsevier

After more than a year without access to anything published in Elsevier journals, a Read & Publish deal was finalised with the publisher. This means that you can make your research Open Access free of charge in more than 2000 Elsevier journals, as well as in some titles from The Lancet and Cell Press. The Open Access publishing part of the deal began on January 1 2020 which means that only articles submitted after this date will be covered by the agreement.

Other Publishing Agreements

Did you know that there is no fee for publishing Open Access in a long list of journal publishers? Chalmers has agreements this year with:

  • American Chemical Society (ACS)
  • American Physical Society (APS)
  • BioMedCentral (Springer)
  • Cambridge University Press
  • De Gruyter
  • Elsevier
  • Institute of Physics (IOP)
  • International Water Association (IWA)
  • Nature Research (Springer)
  • Oxford University Press
  • Palgrave MacMillan (Springer)
  • Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC)
  • SAGE
  • Springer och Springer Open
  • SPIE (the international society for optics and photonics)
  • Taylor and Francis
  • Wiley

Besides these, there are several discounts available for publishing in pure Open Access journals, such as MDPI, Frontiers, Inderscience, and book publishing at IWA.

Additionally, the library’s own OA fund has recently reopened to receive applications. The fund contains 200 000 SEK and finances the author fee in pure Open Access journals (journals which are not financed through subscriptions).

If there is no funding for Open Access publishing, you can still make your paper Open Access by uploading a copy of if in Chalmers Research. Most journals allow that the accepted peer-reviewed version is used. You can check your possibilities in Sherpa/Romeo http://sherpa.ac.uk/romeo/search.php.

You can find all Open Access agreements on the Chalmers library’s website, http://www.lib.chalmers.se/en/publishing/open-access/publish-oa/

More agreements on the way …

The organisation IEEE is a publisher where Chalmers researchers frequently publish. Unfortunately the two parties have not reached an agreement yet, but the National Library Consortia for Open Access publishing aims to make a deal with the publisher before 2021.

This is how to do it

To take advantage of these publisher deals, the corresponding author needs to be affiliated to a Swedish university within the agreement. As a researcher at Chalmers you are required to correctly affiliate yourself to Chalmers in the publication. Using your Chalmers email address in the submission process simplifies the identification of your article. For most of the publishers, you will get a notification after submission about the possibility to publish Open Access for free, through an agreement with Chalmers. There is no need to do anymore than that.

To further increase the visibility of your research results, publish a pdf of your paper in Chalmers Research.
